Chad Carter began his role at Kirkwood by the River in October 2014. Chad brings to Kirkwood 16 years of experience in the senior care industry and believes that caring for God’s senior population is the greatest honor that any man could have. Chad has been a licensed nursing home administrator for 12 years and has served in various leadership roles within nonprofit, multi-family Continuing Care Retirement Communities.

Jeff joined the staff of Kirkwood by the River in August 2013. He has been a licensed Nursing Home administrator for over 22 years and has worked in a variety of different settings. He is responsible for managing Assisted Living, Specialty Care Assisted Living and Skilled Nursing. He believes working with the elderly is his calling.

With over 30 years experience in Accounting and as a CPA, he has devoted his career to providing care and services to non-profit organizations. William feels that, “Kirkwood is the dream of a church that had the vision that the elderly would live out their lives with dignity and respect.”

Harold Simon, MD

Dr. Harold Simon has practiced internal medicine for 30 years in the Birmingham area.  He devotes his time to retirement community medicine including all aspects of elder care from Independent Living to Assisted Living to Skilled Nursing.  He is especially interested in meeting the specific needs and desires of the individual elder in the way he or she wants them met.  Dr. Simon feels that, “Listening is my most important tool.”

Sandi joined the marketing team at Kirkwood in October of 2011 and holds a Bachelors degree in Marketing from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. She has a passion for serving the residents of Kirkwood and has dedicated herself to helping seniors and their families during retirement community and hospital transitions. Not only does she enjoy her role at Kirkwood, but she is learning so much about life through the residents of Kirkwood and feels positive that God has her here for a reason.

Cheryl Ray

Cheryl joined the staff at Kirkwood in September of 2015. She has 17 years of human resources experience, including recruiting, employment, employee relations, training, benefits and compensation. Most of her experience has been in the healthcare industry. In addition to managing HR in healthcare, she has worked and managed in the international construction and manufacturing environments, which required her to wear many hats. Cheryl graduated from The University of South Alabama. She feels she has found her work home here at Kirkwood because of the wonderful staff that shares her passion for caring and contributing to the wellbeing of the residents. She trusts that God led her here and has a great sense of pride to be a part of the Kirkwood family.

Claudia joined the staff at Kirkwood by the River in March 2015. Having been born and raised in Texas, Claudia met and married a Birmingham native and became enchanted with The Magic City. She has shared most of her working life with those 65 years and better, leading various types of fitness and exercise, activities and programs. “Joining the Kirkwood Team is indeed a blessing in my life,” she says.

Carla came to Kirkwood by the River in November 2013. After seven years experience in business kwadministration, she joined the senior care industry, where she has been for more than ten years. Carla plans, coordinates and oversees all activities in Skilled Nursing at Kirkwood. “I’ve enjoyed every minute of it,” she says. “Working here at Kirkwood by the River is not a job, it’s a calling.”

Rev. Richard B. Hanna

Rev. Hanna has been serving as Chaplain at Kirkwood by the River since 2004.  He has a Master of Divinity Degree and served for nearly 20 years as a Pastor of a local Church.  At Kirkwood, Rev. Hanna offers weekly Bible Studies and Worship Services for our residents, along with pastoral care and support for residents in all the levels of care at Kirkwood.  He also helps organize various outings to baseball games, lunches out and other special programs in our community.

Paulina joined the staff of Kirkwood by the River in 2006. She has 23 years of nursing experience including intensive care, emergency and recovery room. She enjoys the family-type atmosphere afforded by working with elders and appreciates working with their families in providing a safe and happy place for them to love. In 2011, she obtained her license in Assisted Living and Specialty Care.

Jennifer has been a part of the Kirkwood family since 2005. She received her license in 1997 after graduating from the University of Alabama with a Bachelor of Social Work and has been working as a social worker ever since. Her experiences with the mentally ill, foster children and now elderly residents at Kirkwood have enriched her life as she finds helping individuals and families through life’s circumstances a rewarding and introspective career.

Lisa joined the staff in September of 1997. She is responsible for human resources and maintaining the accounting office duties while working closely with the CFO. Lisa loves Kirkwood and cannot imagine spending her career anywhere else. She says it’s a blessing to get to work in such a relaxing atmosphere.

Christine began working at Kirkwood in August 1999. Over the past 16 years, she has held every position on our dining staff. In 2013, Christine received her Dietary Managers degree from the University of Florida and was certified in April 2014. She became Director of Dining Services in June 2015. Our kitchen and dining rooms wouldn’t be the same without Christine’s diligent service and dedication to our residents!

Angie Hopper

Angie Hopper started at Kirkwood by the River in April of 1980 and became the Director of Housekeeping and Laundry in 1990. Angie is responsible for the cleanliness on all levels of care and scheduling and ordering of all supplies.
