COVID-19 (Coronavirus) Prevention Efforts. More than 96% of our residents have been vaccinated.

Kirkwood by the River has been closely monitoring the COVID-19 pandemic and will continue to monitor the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) website and communication, Local Health Departments and State agencies for updated information related to COVID-19. We will continue to adjust our emergency response plan as new information becomes available. We will provide updates through our website as things change.

Visitor Information and Guidelines for Residents:

Please help us keep your loved ones safe by following visitation guidelines provided by CMS (Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services) and the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention):
  • Do schedule an appointment to visit with your loved one (Assisted Living, Memory Care Assisted Living and Skilled Nursing)
  • Do use alcohol-based hand sanitizer before, during and after your visit
  • Do wear a mask covering your mouth and nose during your entire visit in the facility
  • Do maintain social distance of at least six feet from staff and residents. No touching or hugging.
  • Do keep out of areas that are not designated for visitation
  • Do not remove your mask while in the community
  • Do not leave the designated visitation area (Assisted Living, Memory Care Assisted Living and Skilled Nursing visitors)
  • Do not come to the facility without an appointment (Assisted Living, Memory Care Assisted Living and Skilled Nursing visitors)
  • Do not come to the facility if you have any symptoms - coughing, sore throat, fever, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of sense of taste or smell - even if you attribute these symptoms to some other cause (allergies or cold).

Families may visit residents in their apartments if desired. Please check in at the front desk and follow the normal screening procedures. We ask that visitation be limited to no more than two people at time and that you practice social distancing and wear mask at all times.

Family members are also able to visit residents from balconies or while social distancing with proper face coverings. The main dining room is now open. Due to the need to enact social distancing, we request that family members not join residents for meals at this time.

Visits can be scheduled through Cevannah Price, Lindsey Cullom, or Janet Lambert. No more than three people can visit a resident at a time. No more than three separate families can visit at one time with a 30- minute limitation on visits. Please sign in at the front desk, answer a series of questions, and have a temperature check prior to visiting. Visits must be in designated visiting areas. No in-room visits at this time unless you have a negative COVID-19 test within 48 hours of the visit.

Outdoor visits must also be scheduled, and CMS/CDC guidance followed. No negative COVID-19 test required.

To arrange a time to visit with your loved one, please call Cevannah Price at 205-956-2184 or email ccox@kirkwoodbytheriver.com.

We are all very thankful that many of the visitation restrictions have been relaxed by CMS and we have enjoyed seeing many of you visiting again and watching the reunions with your loved ones. We do however have a few directives that we are still required to follow whether it is an indoor or outdoor visit. We are still required to follow COVID-19 infection control requirements which includes social distancing. Two of the most important are:

Visitors must wear a mask that covers their mouth and nose and practice social distancing, 6 feet, while visiting their loved one during their entire visit.

Visitors must sign in before entering and have temperature taken.

Due to this directive still being in place we are limited in the number of people that can safely visit the facility at the same time. After evaluating the Skilled Nursing facility, we have determined that we can safely do the following and still follow the CMS directive:

Outdoor Visits:

We can safely have 3 simultaneous visits with 2 visitors per person. We ask that these visits be limited to 30 minutes so more families will be able to visit daily.

Indoor Visits:

We can safely have 3 simultaneous visits with 2 visitors per person. We ask that these visits be limited to 20 minutes so more families will be able to visit daily. Indoor visits must be conducted in a common area so proper social distancing can occur. The only exception is that if your loved one happens to have a private room you may visit in the room.

While it is not required, we do ask that you still make an appointment if you are visiting indoors or out, otherwise you may have to wait to visit if all designated visiting areas are occupied.

Although this is not the perfect scenario it is much better than where we were two weeks ago.

We along with you are eager to open back up without restrictions as soon as it is allowed and safe for everyone involved. We hope further guidance is forthcoming to allow this. We continue to thank you for your patience and understanding.

The Residents

Our residents come from different backgrounds and bring their unique qualities, talents, and life experiences to complete the Kirkwood community. Here are just a few reflections from some individuals who call Kirkwood their home.

My time at Kirkwood was spectacular; they taught me how to walk again. The staff was outstanding, and the care was beyond reproach. When I arrived, I had a long way to go. I was very sick. The first night, they had to lift me as I could not move by myself. When I left, they were chasing me down the hallway. They taught me how to perform the activities of daily living again. It was the best care I could have prayed for, and on top of that, the food was spectacular.

Eli Gold Past Resident

I fell in love with the cottage and the view from my back porch. I am excited to have a yard for Ginger, my poodle, to play in and my own garage, all within an established retirement community!

Charlotte Hamilton Current Resident

My husband and I looked at a number of places when deciding to move to a retirement community. For the most part, we found communities that said, ‘We’re going to take care of you.’ But Kirkwood was different. It wasn’t just about taking care of us. It was also about having fun, having friends, and living life to the fullest. The attitude at Kirkwood was positive and the atmosphere was comforting. We simply couldn’t resist. Without a doubt, the location was ideal. The Cahaba Room that overlooks the river, the mountains, the trails – there were just so many things about life. The community was lively. It was alive.

Alice Brooks Current Resident

We realized we were approaching an age where we might need more assistance than what just downsizing could provide. Knowing we have my sons nearby and the levels of care should we need it is comforting, and the beautiful hillside, river, and the woods makes it that much more appealing. We don’t know of any other community that has the woods, the various levels of care, and so many different amenities.

Phyllis and John Guschke Current Residents

We were moving my parents down from the Cleveland area to be near us. I looked at almost every retirement place in the Birmingham area. The second I turned into Kirkwood’s drive and drove up the hill, I knew that I’d found the perfect place for my parents to live in Alabama. In the six years that my parents have been at Kirkwood, I have always felt nothing but love and helpfulness from every staff member. Everyone is always helpful with a pleasant attitude. You can truly see and feel the family atmosphere. I’m happy that my parents can call Kirkwood their home.

Brenda Sheehan Kirkwood family member

When we learned that Cedar Ridge was being developed, that seemed to fit our needs very well. It is the ideal place for the next phase of our retirement.

Carol and Arthur Stephens Current Residents

One thing that we feel is very important here at Kirkwood by the River is the relationship that we have between the staff and the residents. They are dedicated to making our life here as safe and secure and pleasurable as possible. That goes a long way.

Fred Rogers Current Resident

The community's cottage living surrounded by a wooded, natural environment with access to future healthcare services is what attracted us to Kirkwood!
