Honest Review of Kirkwood by the River

Full Google Review from Fred about Kirkwood by the River:

“My wife and I started searching for a Senior Living facility for her parents, both in their 90’s, a little over 3 years ago. After a good amount of research and visiting several locations in town, we visited Kirkwood By The River. The difference was immediately obvious. It just felt different than the other facilities we had visited. There were lots of residents and employees visible throughout the facility, and they seemed happy! Each one spoke to us and to each other and smiled.

The setting in the woods by the Cahaba River is gorgeous and serene. The building and grounds are well kept and very clean. We toured the facility with Mom and Dad multiple times over several months, and in early December they moved into Independent Living. There are several things that make Kirkwood a superior choice over other facilities in town:

1) It is a not-for-profit facility and that makes a world of difference in how it’s run.

2) The executive staff, including the CEO, is right there in the building and frequently visible, always working and/or engaging with residents. This allows for rapid decision-making and problem resolution.

3) The entire staff at Kirkwood is kind and helpful. As we’ve gotten to know many of them, the overwhelming majority has worked at Kirkwood for 20+ years. That’s rare in today’s world and speaks volumes about the work environment. Happy employees = better care and attention to detail.

4) Kirkwood houses all levels of care under one roof; Independent Living, Assisted Living, Memory Care, Rehab and Skilled Nursing. This was critical for us because if necessary in the future, Mom and Dad can remain in the same building and see each other daily, but reside in and receive different levels of care.

We have peace of mind now knowing that Mom and Dad have help when they need it and yet are able to live mostly on their own with the cat they adore. They both have settled in nicely after 3+ months and are happy and comfortable. Kirkwood By The River was definitely the best choice for our family.

Thanks Fred for your kind words and honest review!

The Residents

Our residents come from different backgrounds and bring their unique qualities, talents, and life experiences to complete the Kirkwood community. Here are just a few reflections from some individuals who call Kirkwood their home.

My husband and I looked at a number of places when deciding to move to a retirement community. For the most part, we found communities that said, ‘We’re going to take care of you.’ But Kirkwood was different. It wasn’t just about taking care of us. It was also about having fun, having friends, and living life to the fullest. The attitude at Kirkwood was positive and the atmosphere was comforting. We simply couldn’t resist. Without a doubt, the location was ideal. The Cahaba Room that overlooks the river, the mountains, the trails – there were just so many things about life. The community was lively. It was alive.

My only regret is that I didn’t move here sooner with my late husband. We would have loved living here together. It would have been perfect for us to travel without the responsibilities of a home.

We were moving my parents down from the Cleveland area to be near us. I looked at almost every retirement place in the Birmingham area. The second I turned into Kirkwood’s drive and drove up the hill, I knew that I’d found the perfect place for my parents to live in Alabama. In the six years that my parents have been at Kirkwood, I have always felt nothing but love and helpfulness from every staff member. Everyone is always helpful with a pleasant attitude. You can truly see and feel the family atmosphere. I’m happy that my parents can call Kirkwood their home.

One thing that we feel is very important here at Kirkwood by the River is the relationship that we have between the staff and the residents. They are dedicated to making our life here as safe and secure and pleasurable as possible. That goes a long way.

Fred Rogers Current Resident

We love that Kirkwood isn’t only church affiliated, but faith is a very prominent, important part of the community. To us, there just couldn’t be a better place.

Bob Tate Current Resident

If you asked me, I would say it gets better every year!
