One of the things that many people have filled their time with during the Covid-19 pandemic is fixing up and making over spaces in their home that need some TLC. When you’re sitting at home, bored, and the only places you’re able to go are those inside your home, having rooms that spark joy and bring peace are important.
We feel the same way here at Kirkwood and while we have not found ourselves to be bored during this season, we have absolutely had to get creative when putting together activities and pastimes for our residents. One of the places we felt needed a little TLC and making over was the Memory Care Activities Room. This room is the heart beat of Kirkwood Lane. Our residents and caretakers use it for movies, sing-a-longs, bible studies, exercise, and so much more! And since we are unable to leave campus for field trips and outings, these on-floor activities have been happening more and more often – so we made this room a priority.
Before our makeover, this room was full of mismatched furniture pieces with files on desks and blank, boring walls. It had accumulated junk from over the years with no good storage options. We decided that we needed to fill the room with happy art, plenty of storage options, and make sure we had room for the widely loved piano! We made sure to incorporate beautiful but useful decor so on one of the walls hangs two large magnetic boards where activities leaders can write and lead games or display art from our residents. We feel like it turned out better than we could have imagined and we pray it blesses residents for years to come!
