In the summer of 1966, my parents began building a new house way out in what was then the wilderness of Jefferson County. It was a time of new beginnings—the summer before my senior year of high school, a new home, and a new season of life for my family. I remember how excited both of my parents were, particularly my dad. For him, buying a wooded lot and building a ranch-style house was a dream come true.
This memory—of excitement, hard work, and the pride of laying a new foundation—reminds me of our newest residents at Kirkwood. Many lived long lives in one home, and moving was not an easy choice. Yet, when they arrive, excitement and possibility are clear. They are not just changing addresses. They are building a foundation for a new life with renewed energy and purpose.
A new season brings a chance for a fresh start. At Kirkwood, this means leaving home maintenance worries behind for what truly matters. It means trading chores for new hobbies, quiet nights for events, and isolation for connection.
Kirkwood, nestled in the woods, reminded my mother of the dream home she and my father built. She found comfort in the familiar setting but also discovered the joy of this new chapter. For her and for so many others, Kirkwood offers the ideal combination of comfort and adventure.
I never tire of listening to the amazing stories of our residents. They come from many walks of life, and quite often, their decision to move here is to be closer to family in Birmingham. This blend of good healthcare, a vibrant community, and family close by is the winning formula for the next season of their lives. It’s a new beginning that is not about letting go of the past, but about building on a rich history and stepping confidently into a bright future.
Peace,
Cary
