Preparing for Thanksgiving is a great part of our fall tradition. We anticipate the changing colors and temperatures and the gathering of family and friends. In preparation, we consider food, but we also consider logistics. I believe that the work of organizing family gatherings is worth it. Family is important – both our biological families and our adopted families, including our Kirkwood family.
This Thursday, we intentionally pause and acknowledge the enduring grace and faithfulness of God. As people of faith, we take seriously the commands of Jesus to care for our neighbors and to feed the hungry. Just as the Israelites were sustained by God’s provision in the wilderness, and as the early church shared their bounty, we reflect on God’s endless provision in our lives. Kirkwood residents participated in our annual Thanksgiving Food Drive, collecting canned and dry goods for the Independent Presbyterian Church Food Pantry. Their spirit of generosity was inspiring.
As we move closer to the holidays, let us anchor our hearts in hope and eternal gratitude. We are reminded of Paul’s powerful instruction in 1 Thessalonians 5:18: “Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” Our hope and gratitude is drawn from the steadfast faithfulness of God. We are God’s children. We know God loves us, God cares for us, and God wants us to live in joy.
In addition to our Thanksgiving Food Drive, we have planned opportunities this week to help prepare our spirits, including a Thanksgiving Day worship service. All are welcome.
With the changing seasons, we realize again that according to God’s plan, there is a season for everything. The changing seasons remind us that the world changes, and so do our lives. We live into the future assured of God’s care, leadership, love, and grace. May your week be filled with the deep peace and abundant love that comes from our Savior. We pray you have a blessed, restful, and safe holiday, surrounded by the people you love.
Happy Thanksgiving!
Peace,
Cary
