Yesterday, our community came together for a truly special Ash Wednesday service. What made it particularly meaningful was the spirit of interfaith collaboration, as our own Chaplain Cary Speaker was joined by Episcopal Priest Becca Walton to lead the observance. This partnership beautifully reflects the inclusive nature of our community, where residents from diverse faith backgrounds come together to share their spiritual journeys.
Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the season of Lent, a 40-day period of reflection, repentance, and renewal leading up to Easter. It’s a time for introspection, for acknowledging our shortcomings, and for deepening our relationship with God. The imposition of ashes, a symbolic reminder of our mortality (“Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return”), serves as a powerful call to humility and a recognition of our need for grace.
During Lent, many Christians engage in practices such as prayer, fasting, and almsgiving to foster spiritual growth and reorient their hearts towards God. It’s a journey of letting go of old habits and embracing new or reestablished faithful ways of living. At Kirkwood, we recognize the importance of supporting our residents’ spiritual well-being. This Ash Wednesday service, with its interfaith dimension, provided a space for residents to connect with their faith, find strength in community, and embark on the Lenten journey together.
