Reflection from Kirkwood Chaplain, The Rev. Lucy Turner
Recently, Jane Pauley interviewed Michael J. Fox, who was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease almost 30 years ago. Mr. Fox has never made his diagnosis a secret; in fact, he has been quite open over the years about the progression of his disease.
When Ms. Pauley asked Mr. Fox about living with Parkinson’s, he said, “With gratitude, optimism is sustainable.”
What a wonderful reminder to welcome each day with thanksgiving. For people of faith, this means thanksgiving to God for all that we have been given. Yes, “morning by morning new mercies (we) see.” For even in the midst of pain, suffering and loss, our gracious God is with us.
As the Apostle Paul instructs us in the letter to the Romans, “Hope does not disappoint us, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us.” (Romans 5:5)
