How to Find “The One:” A Guide to Finding Your Match in Retirement Living

By Sarah Sexton | Publish Date February 10, 2025

Choosing a retirement community can feel a bit like finding your perfect Valentine – you’re searching for a special place that truly complements your unique needs and desires. Just as you wouldn’t settle for just anyone, your retirement community should be a perfect match. Here’s a guide on how to find “The One” for you:

  1. Define Your “Love Language”

Lifestyle: Do you crave an active social scene with vibrant activities or a more tranquil environment? Or both? Consider what amenities are must-haves for you. Kirkwood offers something for everyone, with on and off-campus entertainment each week and ample indoor and outdoor community spaces for you to enjoy (including wellness centers, dining options, faith-based community spaces, and more).

Care Needs: What level of care is most important to you? Kirkwood offers Independent Living, Assisted Living, Memory Care Assisted Living, Short-term Rehab, and Skilled Nursing, allowing residents to shape their preferred retirement lifestyle while also preparing for future needs.

Budget: Determine your budget for entrance fees, monthly service fees, and any other potential costs. Consider your current cost of living as a homeowner and compare cost of living within a community to ensure your “Valentine” is within your means.

Location: Do you prefer to be in the hustle and bustle of downtown or in a quieter area? At Kirkwood, we offer the best of both worlds. Our community is located on 120 acres along the Cahaba River but still just minutes from Birmingham’s thriving cultural scene, strongest neighborhoods, and world-renowned healthcare facilities.

  1. Go on a Few “Dates”

Start online: Explore websites, read reviews, and compare different communities. At Kirkwood, you can also contact a staff member who can help navigate any questions you have.

Make a reservation: Visit communities that pique your interest. Pay attention to the overall atmosphere, the cleanliness and maintenance of the community, and the friendliness of the staff. Talk to current residents. They can provide invaluable insights into their experiences and help you determine if this community is the right “match” for you.

  1. Ask the Right “Getting-to-Know-You” Questions

Care services: Inquire about the availability and cost of different care levels to ensure you are able to stay within the community long-term.

Amenities and services: Ask about dining and hospitality, transportation services, social activities, and wellness programs.

Staff: Ask about staff retention. Get to know the staff member showing you around the community and hear what they enjoy about their job. You will learn a lot from a staff member about the company culture!

  1. Look for Long-Term Compatibility

Choose a community that aligns with your long-term goals and provides a sense of security and stability as your needs evolve.

Consider how the community can support your overall well-being, including your physical, mental, and social health.

Include family members in your conversations so that everyone is on board.

Trust your instincts and choose a community that feels like the right fit for you – a true “love match” that will bring you years of happiness and fulfillment.

  1. Make the Move

Once you have found “the” retirement community for you, talk to the staff about hopping on a waiting list. Now more than ever, it is important to let us know you’re interested so that you receive priority access to apartments as they become available.

Just like finding your perfect romantic partner, finding the perfect retirement community requires patience, research, and a little bit of intuition. Happy searching!

The Residents

Our residents come from different backgrounds and bring their unique qualities, talents, and life experiences to complete the Kirkwood community. Here are just a few reflections from some individuals who call Kirkwood their home.

My time at Kirkwood was spectacular; they taught me how to walk again. The staff was outstanding, and the care was beyond reproach. When I arrived, I had a long way to go. I was very sick. The first night, they had to lift me as I could not move by myself. When I left, they were chasing me down the hallway. They taught me how to perform the activities of daily living again. It was the best care I could have prayed for, and on top of that, the food was spectacular.

Eli Gold Past Resident

I fell in love with the cottage and the view from my back porch. I am excited to have a yard for Ginger, my poodle, to play in and my own garage, all within an established retirement community!

Charlotte Hamilton Current Resident

My husband and I looked at a number of places when deciding to move to a retirement community. For the most part, we found communities that said, ‘We’re going to take care of you.’ But Kirkwood was different. It wasn’t just about taking care of us. It was also about having fun, having friends, and living life to the fullest. The attitude at Kirkwood was positive and the atmosphere was comforting. We simply couldn’t resist. Without a doubt, the location was ideal. The Cahaba Room that overlooks the river, the mountains, the trails – there were just so many things about life. The community was lively. It was alive.

Alice Brooks Current Resident

We realized we were approaching an age where we might need more assistance than what just downsizing could provide. Knowing we have my sons nearby and the levels of care should we need it is comforting, and the beautiful hillside, river, and the woods makes it that much more appealing. We don’t know of any other community that has the woods, the various levels of care, and so many different amenities.

Phyllis and John Guschke Current Residents

We were moving my parents down from the Cleveland area to be near us. I looked at almost every retirement place in the Birmingham area. The second I turned into Kirkwood’s drive and drove up the hill, I knew that I’d found the perfect place for my parents to live in Alabama. In the six years that my parents have been at Kirkwood, I have always felt nothing but love and helpfulness from every staff member. Everyone is always helpful with a pleasant attitude. You can truly see and feel the family atmosphere. I’m happy that my parents can call Kirkwood their home.

When we learned that Cedar Ridge was being developed, that seemed to fit our needs very well. It is the ideal place for the next phase of our retirement.

Carol and Arthur Stephens Current Residents

One thing that we feel is very important here at Kirkwood by the River is the relationship that we have between the staff and the residents. They are dedicated to making our life here as safe and secure and pleasurable as possible. That goes a long way.

Fred Rogers Current Resident

The community's cottage living surrounded by a wooded, natural environment with access to future healthcare services is what attracted us to Kirkwood!
